It was 2014. I was working at McCormick. Go to where you keep your spices, Yes, that McCormick. My job was on the second shift on the manufacturing floor (note, wash your hands before using the bathroom after handling tons of spices). The way we worked was there were four people on the line at the start of the shift. When breaks would start, about two hours into the shift, you would make do with three workers on the line. The management team was okay with the workers figuring their own breaks, as long as three people were always working.
I was also freelancing for Fight! Magazine (RIP) at the time and I had lined up an interview with Nick Diaz. The interview was going to be my first cover piece. That was a pretty big moment in my writing career (remember, that career also had me working full time — and a ton of overtime — as a McCormick employee, so, yeah “career’).
So, the moment came, and I figured I’d be fine with an hour off the line and so I arranged for that with my co-workers, who were weirdly supportive of the interview. One was even an MMA fan, so he knew of Diaz.
Okay, so I had to wash up, walk to the car, eat my lunch and then get on the phone with what I figured would be 30 minutes at most to talk to Diaz. I seemed to forget that Diaz, when interested in speaking, could be, let’s say, verbose. The audio was more than an hour. If I remember correctly, the entire time I was off the floor was closer to 90 minutes. Needless to say, my coworkers were less giving after that.
Anyway, I found that audio today and I’m going to release it in “podcast” form and on YouTube. It’s dated, sure, but it’s Nick Diaz, so I think there is interest in that interview. I will also post the magazine story.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. As you may or may not know. I have a Patreon and Substack and both those allow you, the media consumer, to give money to me, the writer/podcaster/bullshit artist…
With that, I’m going to kind of treat this as a fundraiser type of thing. So, I’m going to roll this out in stages. Stage One will be for those who want to contribute to the Substack / Patreon. So, if you sign up at the $5 a month level or donate $50 for a year, you’ll get that audio ASAP. A few days after that I’ll drop it on the YouTube page for free. I am monetized there, so hopefully it’ll garner enough listens/views to make some money. Finally, after that, it’ll be an audio podcast. All this will happen between now and Friday. Paid things will start taking place today (I hope) and go through Thurs. So, you have time to commit if you want to help me out financially.
I hate begging, but hey, at least you get something right?
If you sign up via Patreon you’ll also get the C’mon Now MMA Podcast as soon as it’s wrapped up, which is always the night before it drops for the non-paying subscribers and the YouTube folks, so that is something else you get via Patreon.
So, you can sign up via Substack, again for $5 a month or Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/cmonnowmma?fan_landing=true)
