Well, here we are. This week is loosely based around Dischord records…
Also, support your local libraries and animal rescues.

Non-fiction to read

My favorite Fugazi song:
A magazine to read
Maggot Brain reminds me of the days of “Forced Exposure” and “Your Flesh” where you would wait for the next issue of the magazine to come out and read every word between the covers. A great mag produced by Jack White’s Third Man Records and edited by the long-time music writer, editor and expert Mike McGonigal, who founded the influential Chemical Imbalance zine before many of you were born (seriously - 1984) is a treasure trove of knowledge and great writing centered around music and the arts. Subscribe - you won’t regret it.
Third Man released a PDF edition in 2020 if you want to check out what it’s all about before subscribing.
A Dischord record that still blows my mind
Nation of Ulysses - The Sound of Young America - if you never saw this band live, you missed something crazy
A book to search out
If you can find this book, do it. “Banned in DC: Photos and Anecdotes from the DC Punk Underground (79-85). There were two printings. I think each were in the 1,500 range.
Some things I wrote for Bloody Elbow this week:
Khamzat Chimaev playing the right game ahead of UFC 279 matchup vs. Nate Diaz
In defense of ‘early’ stoppages in MMA
My favorite Dischord band
Soulside - interviewed them in my car in a freezing parking lot sometime in the 80’s.
A podcast to check out
Criminal - This is an episode from 2021 that looks at the crazy death of Bobby Fuller, who was found dead in his car months after he released “I Fought the Law”
An underrated non-Dischord band
Kingface - A band that was not on Dischord, but was incredible. Someone described them to me as Minor Threat meets Van Halen.
