Dana White Is Back On His Bullshit: Boston Edition
or Dana White Spoke At The Post-Fight Presser
I fear this is going to be a column I’ll need to work on after every event where UFC president Dana White makes an appearance at the post-fight press conference. The main focus of this post-event piece will be looking closely at what White says during his time on the dais. I don’t think it’s a stretch to call this, “Dana White is back on his bullshit,” because if there’s one thing White loves more than terrible rock music from the 80s and 90s, it is just saying stuff to the media.
So, Is That The BMFI Title He’ll Get?
When asked about Colby Covington saying that he would smack White in the head with the UFC welterweight title belt if he defeats Kamaru Usman in December, White could have laughed off Covington's comment. Instead, White went with, "Good luck with that. Good luck with that. He's a big mouth fucking idiot."
Now, I'm sure many people agree with White's assessment of Covington, but that's a silly response. One of White's main tasks is promoting fighters and that includes Covington. There's a chance that White might have to sell Covington as his next 170-pound champion. When he refers to a potential champion as a "big mouth fucking idiot," that's a problem. Imagine your boss saying the same thing about you in a public setting. Oh, never mind, White is not Covington's boss, I forgot that for a second, he's just the guy Covington works for as an independent contractor.
Release Him Or Don’t, But You Can’t Make Him Retire
White said he had a deal with Joe Lauzon that Lauzon would retire on Friday night, no matter how Lauzon's fight ended. White then said that he would force Lauzon to retire.
Something to think about, White was willing to let BJ Penn go out and get his ass kicked nine times in 11 fights dating back to 2010, but he wants to retire Lauzon after a first-round TKO win.
If White wants to retire Lauzon, which he can't do since Lauzon is an independent contractor, the UFC needs to release Lauzon with no strings so he can sign on with another promotion if n wants to do so. If the UFC doesn't want Lauzon on its roster, that's fine, but if that is the case, the promotion needs to cut him loose as soon as possible.
Mine! Mine! Mine!
One of the things I "love" about White is when he refers to the UFC as his. He did just that in a recent interview with the Boston Globe.
"Yes, They own all my content, right? They have all my content on ESPN+, plus I'm bringing all these other peoples' content onto UFC Fight Pass," White said.
White is not the UFC. His sycophantic admirers might believe he is. White might even like to think he is thanks to the UFC myth-makers, but he's not. White was the face of the promotion under the Fertitta brothers and he is the face of the UFC under the new ownership, but he is not the UFC. He's just an employee.
He Likes Me, He Really Likes Me
Also, during that Boston Globe interview, White was asked about his support for Donald Trump.
That support basically came down to the fact that hey, "Trump was nice to me. He even calls me occasionally." Which, as a reason to support someone, is flimsy at best. But let's be real, White has never been what anyone would call a deep thinker. So it's not surprising that he would throw his XL hat in with an (alleged) billionaire because he was nice to him.
White even added, "He is the most solid guy you'll ever meet. He gives you his word and it's gold, I'm telling you, it's unbelievable."
What's unbelievable is that statement, but then again, White's ability to convince people he's telling the truth when he's clearly lying is right on par with Trump's ability to do the same.
Anyway, (shit)birds of a feather and all that…
Deep Thoughts With Dana White
Speaking of deep thoughts, this is White on his political stance, "...I believe in taking care of people that don't have, I believe in taking care of the planet – you know, all that type of stuff."
First, the idea that White believes in taking care of people that don't have is laughable when he underpays as he does.
Also, if your political statement includes "all that type of stuff," you might want to put more thought into just what you believe.
Allow Me To Clear Something Up
Look, I don't hate Dana White, I don't know Dana White. I do dislike his manipulative ways and his bullying and that's why I write about him. There's a lack of speaking truth to power in the MMA media, no one can deny that. I plan to do as much of that as I possibly can. Some people will read this and still think I’m just complaining, but I don’t see it that way. I don’t think it’s some kind of lofty endeavor, but I do think it needs to be done.
