Welcome to the latest C’mon Now newsletter. This is the place where I’ll share my thoughts on all the goings-on in MMA. Those thoughts could range from media criticism to advice for folks looking to get into MMA writing to why certain fighters or managers are not good for the sport.
Today’s topic is the official UFC rankings, which I’m going to be keeping an eye on going forward…if there is interest in this.

Okay, here is the first go round of the Official UFC Rankings Watch. What I have below is all the changes to the rankings by the individual media members who contribute to the rankings.
Ideally the only changes on these updates would be fights that happened the Saturday before the updated rankings. If you scroll down to the bottom of this list, you’ll see that it’s rather lengthy. That should alarm you considering that on June 27 the only ranked fighters who competed were:
Lightweight: Dustin Poirier, Dan Hooker
Obviously more rankings changes happened than those two fighters this week.
What I found is that there seems to be some lag between the fights and when rankings panel members get their rankings in. That should be an area of concern for both the UFC and the third-party that compiles the rankings.
I’m going to reach out to UFC and rankings folks to see if I can get some clarification as to what is happening here, but at first glance it appears the “Official UFC rankings” are anything but timely.
